Planned Capital Spending - December 2019

Big Gain in U.S. Industrial Spending; Canadian Spending Down

RALEIGH, NC

Research by Industrial Reports, Inc. shows combined U.S. and Canadian planned capital spending rose over 30 percent in December to $34.95 billion compared to November’s $26.45 billion. Projects in both nations ranged in value from $1 million to $9.4 billion. The research organization reported 173 planned U.S. and Canadian projects in December.

Planned U.S. project spending more than doubled in December with $33.38 billion in planned investment compared to the November total of $15.01 billion. U.S. spending was mostly composed of $16.35 billion in planned investment for process projects, followed by $11.09 billion for power and energy projects and $3.34 billion for manufacturing projects. Louisiana was the U.S. leader in planned investment for the month with $11.45 billion, followed by Arizona with $3.98 billion and Texas with $2.56 billion. The majority of U.S. project activity was in Texas which had 16 planned projects reported, followed by Virginia with 12 projects, and Florida and Ohio, each with eight.

Canadian planned investment plummeted to $1.57 billion in December compared to November’s $11.44 billion. Process projects also led all Canadian markets with $1.08 billion reported in planned spending, followed by $266 million for manufacturing projects and $154 million for power and energy projects. Alberta led the provinces and territories with $465 million in planned spending. We reported $370 million in planned spending in Ontario, while Yukon Territory followed with $296 million. The majority of Canadian project activity was in Alberta with seven planned projects reported. There were six projects reported in British Columbia and five in Ontario.
